Building a great app is only the first step. If people cannot find it in the store, they will never download it. Millions of apps compete on Google Play and the App Store, and most users find new apps by searching inside the store. This is where App Store Optimization (ASO) comes in.
At TecClub, we publish apps for our own products and for clients, and we prepare store listings as part of every launch. In this guide, we explain what ASO is, which parts of your listing matter most on each store, and a simple checklist you can follow to get more visibility and more installs.
What Is App Store Optimization?
ASO is the process of improving your app's store listing so it ranks higher in search results and turns more visitors into installs. Think of it as SEO for app stores. It has two main goals:
- Visibility: Show up when people search for words related to your app.
- Conversion: Convince people who see your listing to tap "Install".
Step 1: Keyword Research
Everything starts with the words your users type in the store. Make a list of the problems your app solves and the words people use to describe them. Look at similar apps, check store search suggestions and pick a mix of keywords:
- A few broad keywords that describe your category.
- Many specific, longer phrases with less competition.
- Words in the language your users really use, not only technical terms.
Step 2: Write a Strong App Title
The app title is the most important text field on both stores. Both Google Play and the App Store allow up to 30 characters. Use your brand name plus one or two main keywords, for example "Brand Name: Invoice Maker". Keep it readable, because a title stuffed with keywords looks like spam and can be rejected.
Step 3: Use the Other Text Fields Smartly
| Field | Google Play | App Store |
|---|---|---|
| Title / name | Up to 30 characters | Up to 30 characters |
| Short text | Short description, up to 80 characters | Subtitle, up to 30 characters |
| Hidden keywords | Not available | Keyword field, up to 100 characters |
| Long description | Up to 4,000 characters and used for search | Up to 4,000 characters, mainly for users |
On Google Play
Google reads your full description to understand your app. Use your main keywords naturally in the short description and a few times in the long description. Write for people first: short paragraphs, clear benefits and simple bullet points.
On the App Store
Apple uses the app name, subtitle and the hidden keyword field for search. In the keyword field, separate words with commas, do not repeat words already in your title, and use every character you can. The description is still important, because it helps convince people to download.
Step 4: Make Your Icon and Screenshots Work for You
Most people decide in a few seconds, and they decide with their eyes. Your visuals often matter more than your text.
- Icon: Simple, bold and easy to recognize at a small size. Avoid small text.
- Screenshots: Show the main benefit in the first two screenshots, because many users never scroll further.
- Captions: Add short, clear text on each screenshot, such as "Create invoices in seconds".
- Preview video: A short video can show how the app works better than words.
Step 5: Ratings and Reviews
Ratings affect both ranking and conversion. People trust apps with many good reviews. To improve them:
- Ask for a rating at a happy moment, for example after the user completes a task, using the official in-app review prompts.
- Reply to reviews, especially negative ones, and fix the problems users mention.
- Improve stability, because crashes are one of the fastest ways to get bad reviews.
Step 6: Localize Your Listing
If you have users in different countries, translate your title, descriptions and screenshots. A listing in the user's own language usually converts better, and it also helps you rank for searches in that language.
Step 7: Test, Measure and Update
ASO is not a one-time task. Both stores give you tools to test different versions of your listing: Store listing experiments on Google Play and Product Page Optimization on the App Store. Test one change at a time, such as a new icon or first screenshot, and keep the version that brings more installs. Update your keywords and screenshots every few months, and always after a big new feature.
ASO Tips for VPN and Utility Apps
VPN, security and utility apps compete in some of the busiest categories on both stores. A few extra points help them stand out:
- Be honest in your claims. Avoid words like "100% anonymous" or "unblock everything". They can cause rejection and they hurt trust.
- Show speed and simplicity. Screenshots with a one-tap connect screen and a clear server list work better than technical settings.
- Highlight real features. Protocols, number of locations, kill switch and no-logs policy are what users compare.
- Explain the free and paid plans. Clear pricing in screenshots and text reduces bad reviews from surprised users.
- Use country-specific listings. Many VPN users search in their own language, so localized keywords matter a lot.
Which Numbers Should You Track?
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Google Play Console and App Store Connect both show the main ASO numbers for free:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Impressions | How often your app appears in search and browse results. |
| Store listing visitors / product page views | How many people open your listing. |
| Conversion rate | How many visitors install the app. This shows if your icon, screenshots and text work. |
| Search vs browse installs | Whether people find you through keywords or through store categories and charts. |
| Average rating and recent reviews | How users feel about the app right now. |
| Uninstalls and retention | Whether the listing promises what the app really delivers. |
A simple rule: if impressions are low, work on keywords. If impressions are good but installs are low, work on your icon, screenshots and first lines of text.
Common ASO Mistakes
- Stuffing the title with keywords until it is hard to read.
- Using screenshots that show settings screens instead of the main benefit.
- Ignoring reviews and ratings.
- Copying the same text to both stores without using each store's fields properly.
- Setting the listing once and never updating it.
Quick ASO Checklist
- Keyword list ready with broad and specific phrases.
- Title with brand name plus one main keyword.
- Short description or subtitle with a clear benefit.
- App Store keyword field fully used, no repeated words.
- First two screenshots show the main value.
- Simple, recognizable icon.
- In-app review prompt at a happy moment.
- Listing translated for main markets.
- A/B test planned for icon or screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ASO take to show results?
Changes to your text can affect search ranking within a few weeks. Visual changes like screenshots can improve conversion faster. The best results come from regular updates over time.
Is ASO different on Google Play and the App Store?
Yes. Google Play reads your full description for search, while the App Store relies on the name, subtitle and hidden keyword field. That is why each listing should be written separately.
Do paid ads replace ASO?
No. Ads can bring quick installs, but a well-optimized listing makes every ad cheaper because more visitors convert. ASO and ads work best together.
Can a brand-new app rank without any reviews?
Yes, but it takes more care. A new app should target specific, less competitive keywords first instead of the biggest category words. As installs, ratings and reviews grow, the app can slowly rank for broader keywords too.
Should I change my app name for ASO?
Small changes are fine, such as adding one keyword after your brand name. Avoid changing the brand part often, because users who already know your app may get confused and your brand searches can drop.
How often should I update my store listing?
Review it every few months, and always update it after a major feature, a new market or a big change in your app's design.
